One of the most common ways scammers will try and extract information from customers is through a process called phishing.
Phishing attempts can take many forms, such as email, text, or even fake websites or social media accounts. Scammers pretending to be a part of Newton will often provide a fraudulent link or directly ask for information pertaining to your account.
How to protect your account from phishing:
- We will never ask for your account details via social media or SMS.
- Always check who the email sender is when communicating with Newton - our Support team will only ever contact you from support@newton.co. Read more below about how to validate that an email address is Newton’s.
- We will never ask you to share your password with us.
- Our official website and login pages are as follows: https://newton.co and https://web.newton.co. Or, use the mobile app on your mobile device. Read more about phishing websites below.
- Newton Support does not currently have an inbound phone number - if you find a phone number appearing to be from Newton, do not call it.
- Make sure to only trust communications from our official social media accounts found here: How can I follow Newton on social media?
If you believe that you have encountered a phishing scam please report it by submitting through the in-app help chat, or via https://newton.co/support. Also, avoid any communication with the potential scammer. If you believe you have fallen victim to phishing, immediately change the password on your account and report it.
What are phishing websites?
Phishing websites are created to mimic Newton’s website. Bad actors use these sites to gain access to your account. Often they appear as an ad at the top of your internet search results. At first glance, a phishing website can seem to have the same website address as Newton. However, usually, the phishing website address is slightly different from the official Newton website address. Look out for spelling and grammatical errors on these sites.
How can you ensure you don’t visit a phishing website?
Take extra precautions to verify the URL in your browser address bar when visiting the Newton website to log in to your account. Ensure that you only go to https://newton.co and https://web.newton.co to access the official Newton website and log in to your Newton account.
What are phishing emails?
Phishing emails make it appear as though an email came from Newton. Often the email will ask you to respond with personal information or provide a link for you to click to login to your account. Also, look out for spelling and grammatical errors.
How can you protect yourself from phishing emails?
Newton will only email you from support@newton.co, hello@newton.co, and noreply@newton.co. In addition, Interac e-transfer emails that show Newton as sender will come from notify@payments.interac.ca.
If you receive a suspicious email purporting to be from Newton, please do not click any links in the email. You can click on the “reply” option to see if the email address that shows up in the “Reply” option is one of the three emails address Newton uses. If you suspect that the email is not legitimate, please reach out to our Customer Success Team at support@newton.co to confirm the validity of the email.
